Access to Algebra 2007-2008 – – Click here for additional information
Access to Algebra 2007-2008 is a program of embedded professional development for secondary mathematics teachers at AMSP partner secondary schools. It operates through distance learning during the academic year. There is no summer program. Participating teachers assist small numbers of their students to earn three semester hours of college algebra credit on an official University of Kentucky transcript. There are no costs to the student and teachers receive a stipend. The program is in its second year. For more details and results from the first year click here.

The College Reality Store gives students in grades 7-12 and their parents the opportunity to gather information from area two and four year colleges to help make decisions about choosing a college and paying for an education. Booths with representatives from local area collegs will have information about about financial assitance and academic programs in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering. There is no cost to attend; students should register with their school guidance counselors or by contacting Kathy Strunk (865-974-7244) by April 14, 2006.

This is a one-day college awareness program for high school sophomores and juniors interested in math, science, or math/science education and their parents. The purpose is to inform students about how to prepare for college, the classes that are important to have taken, and the role their parents can play. There is no cost to attend; students can contact their guidance counselors for information and registration.

Science Excel 2006-07 – – Click here for additional information >
In the AMSP Science Excel program, more advanced science students assist in the actual teaching of science to younger students. Through this peer tutoring process, the older students reinforce and further their scientific knowledge and the younger students profit from more instructional time directed to their individual needs. Students involved in the Science Excel program tutor one-on-one or in small groups, assist in the review process, help students get caught up from absences, work in developing activities, and assist in the use of technology. It is the hope that through this program these students are encouraged to choose a career in a science-related field or possibly in science teaching.

The Delayed Credit Program provides the opportunity for students in AMSP schools to earn college credit and/or advanced placement at AMSP colleges and universities by taking delayed credit examinations. The 2005 program allows up to 500 students to take examinations in Pre-calculus/College Algebra and Calculus. All student fees will be paid by AMSP. The exams are taken in the student's district and will be scheduled between May 1 and May 12, 2006.

The AMSP "Leadership Internship" initiative provides advanced preparation and leadership opportunities for mathematics and science teachers in partnership school districts. The overall goal for this initiative is to increase the capacity for mathematics and science education leadership throughout the Appalachian region.

The AMSP is soliciting applications for the Year 4 program in Academic Year 2006-07. Applications using the application forms may be transmitted either via postal mail or electronically no later than March 31, 2006.

Partnership Enhancement Project (PEP) Round 3 – – Click here for further information >
One of the major goals of the National Science Foundation Math and Science Partnership (MSP) Program is to help establish working partnerships among school districts and institutions of higher education focused on mathematics and science education reform. Therefore, due to its effectiveness, the AMSP is continuing and expanding the Partnership Enhancement Project (PEP). This small-grant program provides financial, admminstrative and consultative support for local projects in mathematics and science education.

Excel 2006-07 – – Click here for registration information >
AMSP partner mathematics teachers can establish an Excel program for the 2006-07 academic year. In this program, more advanced math students assist in teaching mathematics to younger students. Younger students gain from the additional attention and instruction while older students reinforce their understanding through teaching. Proposals for programs for the 2006-07 academic year are due by June 30, 2006.

In the Explorers Program, mathematics education majors and those considering a becoming mathematics education majors participate in a wide variety of early teaching experiences -- mentoring students in lower-level mathematics courses, tutoring, teaching in a mathematics help center, . . . They are trained for substitute teaching and take part in a seminar. Semester stipends are available.

The AMSP Partner News affords any AMSP teacher or administrative partner (not just math and science teachers) with full access to the AMSP News for instructional and community informational purposes. This access can be extended to students; their publications are approved by the partner and are subject to applicable district polices.

Mathematics for Teachers – – Click here for registration information >
The AMSP College partners are revising the Mathematics for Teachers course sequence taught at their schools. During the fall 2006 semester, they are running pilot sections of the new course. Instructors and students in these pilot courses should register.

Communicating Math Workshop – – Click here for registration information >
The Communicating Mathematics Program will demonstrate in the context of a half day workshop the use of the Web Homework System and Maple to create, maintain, and use homework assignments in mathematics and language classes.

Tech Coordinators – – Click here for registration information >
Technology Coordinators is a program to systematically make the AMSP technology available to the administrators, teachers, faculty, and staff of the partnership. AMSP Technmology Coordinators are district teachers or curriculum specialists who attend periodic one-day technology workshops and subsequently offer in-service workshops for their colleagues. Experience in teaching math or science and an interest in instructional technology are needed, but no prior formal technical training is required.
